"Four Lights" Oil Series

During the Fall of 1998, Mary Deutschman conducted an adult painting class at Beck Center affiliated with the Cleveland Institute of Art. This provided fresh insights and subject matter for me.

The series permitted me to delve into various transformations of various types of illumination. The primary types developed here are bright outdoor light, interior incandescent light, floodlight, and mirror reflected light.

Each painting reflects a different relationship in the transformation of luminescence. The center painting "Four Lights" develops the theme incorporating all four transformations.

Autumn Courtyard

The courtyard was dominated by the bright fall sun which bore into a red brick facade horizontally split into two colors of red. Landscape and amenity structures gave up their form to the strong impact of the reflected sunlight. Building oil paint into oil paint created the abstract forms.

Still Life with Flood

The contrast between natural daylight and the two artificial light sources caused me to explore the difference each type of light produced. This exploration set the theme for a series of studies which lead to the "Four Lights" composition (see below). Here a painter becomes configured into my still life painting. She was aware of being painted, but somewhat uneasy about it.

Daylight To Incandescence

The doorway through a skylit hallway into the open courtyard provided me with a nice transition to study the bright outdoor colors contrasted with the room's interior. The architectural shapes provide an interesting division of both structure and color. Note the play of interior yellow versus the outside brightness of daylight.

Flood To Florescent

In this study the blocks of color begin to work into an interesting composition that is recognized in the organization of the final painting. Note the daylight represented as light blue under the red rectangle of the open door. The mirror is again a part of this work.

Daylight To Flood

Looking directly into the bright flood lamp in front of the brightly sunlit courtyard proved a challenge. Deliberately I chose a smaller canvas and portrayed only what I clearly could see in the circumstances. The results are both interesting as a study and important to the final painting in emphasizing the value and color contrasts.

Mirror Wall

Artists have always held a fascination for mirrors. In this case we see a series of hues that range from magenta-red to yellow-orange. The image in the mirror is abstract and viewed primarily as color shifts while the shape of the mirror and wall are clearly seen as a small modulation in hue.

The Four Lights

The result of the six studies is a large 48"x60" canvas painted in my studio. The contribution of each of the studies is, I believe, fairly apparent in the composition. I particularly liked putting the two different still life images into a single painting. I also enjoy the red/green and violet-blue/orange-yellow contrasts of the complementary opponent color systems.
