"Composing In Oil" Oil Series

During the two year period 1995 to 1997, I continued to enroll in an adult oil painting class conducted by Alan Peters at The Cleveland Institute of Art. My purpose was to raise the level of my oil painting skills. However, a second purpose was to work with a talented painter who would critique my progress weekly. Alan proved to be an excellent foil and teacher.

The two paintings of Alan's Fence are separated by almost two years. The white color treatment was done at the beginning of this period while the yellow colored figure was painted near the end of it. It is clear that my style changed during this time. I like to believe it improved.

Alan's Fence White

Normally I prefer to paint directly from nature. However, this work is done from a projected slide. It is fun to begin with an excellently composed image upon which one can interpret texture and colors.

Alan's Fence Yellow

Two years after painting "Alan's Fence White", the same image was used in another class. This offered a chance to shift from the achromatic white color to a chromatic yellow and blue tonality. The color shift now emphasizes the sunlight and shade upon the subject.

The Cleveland Museum of Art also offered adult painting classes, where this still life was originally done on composition board with oil paint.

This small oil has the strong geometric shapes and flat colors that closely relate to an abstract composition. The original is an oil painting on composition board.

October Still Life

Fall colors of the pumpkin and squash play the highlights of modeled forms. Each object relates to a flat color plane of similar color. These result in an interesting combination of figure-ground interplay.

Green Tuba

Having access at night to the Art Institute's studios offered large and unusual still-life painting opportunities left from the normal daytime classes. Here the hanging tuba changed colors several times as the composition was redefined.

Landscape Structure

At Ohio State University we learned a great deal about visual structure and its aesthetic importance to the final composition. I have included this study as an example of structure underlying both hue and tonal values upon which the subsequent painting would normally introduce further definition of form and detail.

Negative Space

In a similar vein to "Landscape Structure," this study illustrates what painters frequently refer to as negative space. Note that the objects that usually are highly defined are omitted. This leaves the area around them to suggest that focal objects will eventually complete this image.

Night Reflection

A nighttime image of the reflected large still-life objects is mixed with some outside winter scene shapes that intrude upon the reflected scene. The green window mullion divides the painting in upper and lower images, yet they hold together as a single composition.

Arabesque of Oak and Grape

A large grapevine grew into the branches of an ancient oak tree in a corner garden on our property. On sunny days I was able to paint it in oils on canvas. The challenge was to convey the nebulous locations of leaves, sunlight and open patches of sky and then have these elements work as a supporting configuration to the more structured tree and building forms.

Two years following "Sunset 1," I had a second opportunity to paint from the projected photograph taken by Alan Peters. This time the oil painting was done on composition board at a smaller scale.
